Rubi Rose Benton was born Lexington, Kentucky, where she also grew up, to Nardos Ghebrelul, her mother is an Eritrean immigrant dentist, and John Benton, her father, who is a lawyer. He is half-Japanese and half-African descent. Although Eritrean at birth, her mother was born Ethiopia. Because her father was adoptive the paternal grandmother is of Japanese heritage. She has an older sister named Scarlette and a younger sister known as Coral. She lived for a time in Geneva, Switzerland. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia in her senior year in high school. Georgia State University is where she completed her studies in political science. She was raised on Prince, Michael Jackson, Biggie, Marvin Gaye and Chaka Khan. Her music is heavily influenced by Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Foxy Brown. Rose rose to fame when she was the model for the music video for hip-hop group Migos for their single Bad and Boujee. At the time she began appearing regularly on a Twitch stream along with Jamaican born East Coast Hip Hop Commentator DJ Akademiks.
